In addition to the photographs of people, the file also includes images of places Cunard lived and visited, African sculpture, masks, and bracelets, and photographic reproductions of European art.

The collection consists of approximately 5,700 pictures of and related to the British author, heiress, and activist, Nancy Cunard. Included are numerous images of her throughout her life, both alone and with others including such notable figures as Sir Bache and Lady Emerald Cunard (Nancy Cunard’s parents), Louis Aragon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jean Cocteau, Edward Gordon Craig, Henry Crowder, Norman Douglas, W. C. Handy, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, George Padmore, and Tristan Tzara. Some of the portraits, as well as other images, pertain to Negro, an anthology collected and edited by Nancy Cunard. In addition to photographs of people, the file includes views of Nevill Holt, the Cunard family home, and other places in England, as well as snapshots and postcards of various places in Spain, France, Italy, Tunisia, the West Indies, Mexico, and Central and South America. There are also numerous images of African sculpture, masks, and bracelets, including items from Cunard’s personal collection, as well as many photographic reproductions of European art. An index at the end of this guide lists photographers whose work is featured in this file.
This file forms a part of the Harry Ransom Center’s Literary Files Photography Collection, which is comprised of photographs and albums withdrawn from the libraries and/or papers of literary figures, and generally includes photographs either taken by, collected by, or of those figures.
