Scope and Contents


Arthur Todd (d. 1978) was a dance critic, photographer, and patron of the arts. The Arthur Todd Papers, circa 1946-1978, consist mainly of incoming letters, postcards, and greetings cards, some enclosing photographs, programs, magazine covers with autographs, and handwritten notes. The materials are arranged alphabetically by correspondent in a single series.
The letters are primarily from English and American dancers and choreographers, for the most part thanking him for gifts, reviews, favorable notices, and support. Among the principal correspondents are Ruth St. Denis (whose letters represent the bulk of the papers), Alvin Ailey, Alexandra Danilova, Agnes De Mille, Ninette De Valois, Dame Margot Fonteyn, Beryl Grey, Hanya Holm, Doris Humphrey, Tamara Karsavina, José Limón, Dame Alicia Markova, Marie Rambert, and Mary Wigman.
