Scope and Contents

The R. P. Lister Collection contains materials concerning the founding of The Saturdays, a literary society started in London during World War II. The Saturdays first met on March 24, 1944 at the home of writer Helen Pearl Adams, usually referred to by the nickname "Persis" in the collection. The poet R. P. Lister was an early member of the society. Included in the collection are membership lists and summarizations of meeting minutes from 1945-1949. Also included is a typescript draft of a history of the society written by Lister. The history is divided into eleven chapters, and left uncompleted. It records the founding of The Saturdays, the effect of World War II on the group’s meetings, its growth in popularity, and its activities.
