Biographical Sketch


Beth Van Hoesen was born in Boise, Idaho, on June 27, 1926. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Stanford University in 1948, and she subsequently studied abroad in Mexico and France. The Bay Area-based artist pursued intaglio printmaking as her main avenue of expression throughout her career, with subjects ranging from animals to botany to nudes. Van Hoesen died in San Francisco, California, on November 16, 2010.

Scope and Contents


The collection consists of four prints in three media (etching, drypoint, and aquatint), the majority of which were created with the use of a roulette. All are portrait prints, the subjects of which are herself, her husband Mark Adams, artist Ruth Asawa, and photographer Imogen Cunningham.
