View of a news stand in a hotel located in Corpus Christi, Texas. A woman, Virginia Deavers, looks out from behind a tiled counter. Miss Deavers later married Tom Graham. Magazines hang from the window frame above her head. A newspaper rack on the wall outside the stand holds Houston newspapers dated February 14th, 1934. This news stand was identified in 1975 as being in the Nueces Hotel. Later research in the 1980s identified it as being located in the Plaza Hotel. The news stand sold the Houston Post and Houston Chronicle newspapers and a variety of magazines, such as Delineator; True Romance; True Story, 15¢; True Confessions, 10¢; Real America; Cosmopolitan; Movie; McCall's; Romance; Silver Screen; Ladies' Home Journal; and Saturday Evening Post. The store also sold an assortment of cigars and cigarettes. Note the slot machines and the Punget gaming device (a type of marble game) on the counter. |
