Description: |
Photograph album compiled by Robert Shoemaker Strother (American, 1904-1995), a journalist who served in the United States Office of War Information (OWI) during World War II. The album contains 165 mounted photographs as well as clippings and captions. The photographs, all gelatin silver prints, are a combination of snapshots and commercial photographs taken during World War II in Italy, Tunisia, and Greece. Subject matter includes bombers (airplanes), bombing missions including the air strikes on Ploesti, scenes of destruction, military bases, and soldiers engaged in more light-hearted activities. Several pages are devoted to Strother's brother, Capt. Donald Root Strother (1912-1943). Capt. Strother was killed in action during a mission in Java in February 1943, and he was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart Award which were presented to his young son during a ceremony. Additionally the album contains a photograph of cartoonist Bill Mauldin (American, 1921-2003) at work. For preservation purposes, the album was disbound and each leaf is encapsulated in a Mylar sleeve. The original black leather album cover, with "Photographs" debossed in gold on the front, and blank pages are stored in a separate enclosure within the box containing the encapsulated pages. |
