Cartes-de-visite photograph album assembled by Francis Alexander Richard Pemberton in memory of his wife Ann Rosalie Stracey Pemberton (1851-1872) sometime after her death. Mrs. Pemberton was the fourth daughter of Sir Henry Josiah Stracey and Lady Diana Stracey. The album is covered in embossed buff calfskin, and it contains 19 albumen carte-de-visite portraits of Mrs. Pemberton taken in the 1860s and early 1870s by Burgess & Grimwood (9), Elliott & Fry (3), Williams & Mayland (3), W. Hall of Brighton (1), Lucas & Tuck (1), and unidentified photographers (2). The album also contains three memorial poems, one of which is titled "Lines on the Death of Mrs. Pemberton," an illustration of a rose, and a clipping of the wedding announcement for Francis Alexander Richard Pemberton and Ann Rosalie Stracey on October 3, 1871. Helmut Gernsheim notes the album was: "[c]ompiled by her husband in memory of their short, happy marriage.” |
