This collection contains the personal and financial records of Eugene Omar Goldbeck and the National Photo and News Service. The collection ranges from the 19th century to the middle of the 1980s, before Goldbeck's death. The collection is divided into four series: I. Correspondence, II. Financial Records, III. Personal Papers, and IV. Research Materials.
Correspondence contains mostly business related letters from or to the National Photo and News Service. These letters primarily concern the National Photo and News Service's business with different military bases around the United States. The letters discuss coordinating photo shoots, prices and shipment for photo orders, and other messages concerning photo orders. Commendatory letters thank Goldbeck for his photo services and praise him for his skill in photography. Personal correspondence includes correspondence with family and friends and letters relating to Goldbeck's patenting of a motor vehicle device and concerning Goldbeck's desire to memorialize his son's death. Goldbeck was active in politics and wrote many letters to politicians about his political concerns, especially those concerning unionization laws in Texas.
Financial Records contain the business records of the National Photo and News Service and the personal financial records of E.O. Goldbeck. The financial records for the National Photo and News Service show the company's financial status over a period of 60 years. Bank statements in the collection show the many accounts the company had at different banks. Collection sheets list the names of military personnel and Shriners in need of payment for photo orders. Employee records and documents show salaries, time sheets, and tax information for employees of the National Photo and News Service. Invoices are both invoices issued by the National Photo and News Service and those issued by other companies to Goldbeck and the National Photo and News Service. Ledgers include employee records, orders and expenses for the company. Unbound ledgers list photo orders for military personnel divided by military base or fort. Income tax information documents Goldbeck's tax payments, tax returns, and yearly expenses for 50 years.
Personal Papers contains material unrelated to the National Photo and News Service. A book entitled "Ledger for Colored People" is a ledger-turned-scrapbook that belonged to Goldbeck's father, "B.T. Goldbeck, Dealer in Family Groceries, Provisions, Forage and Waggon-yard, on Guadalupe and Linden St., Austin, Tex." The ledger is filled with newspaper clippings, many of which are in German. As Goldbeck was an active member of the Scottish Rite, some of the material in his personal papers relates to his connection with the Rite, including certificates awarded to him by the Rite. Other material includes business cards, maps, memo books, newspaper clippings, photos, and blueprints to the Goldbecks' home.
The final series, Research Materials, contains background information on the military and the SS Queen Mary, as well as Goldbeck's diagrams for military photos. (Scope & Contents) |
