Description:

The collection consists of 47 photographs by John F. W. (John Frederick William) Herschel (English, 1792-1871), the bulk of which were made using experimental processes including chrysotype (4), cyanotype (12), thermo-cyanotype (1), kelaenotype (8), and argentotype (3). Of particular note are the anthotypes (15) which are early color photograms, also called “flower paintings,” made with flower pigments. Also present are an engraving which was made transparent, and a cyanotype and a salted paper print both of which were made from the engraving so the tones are reversed. Lastly, there is a special edition, gelatin silver print made in 1890 from Herschel's original 1839 calotype of the Slough telescope. Four copy prints of portraits of members of the Herschel family are included for reference only. Select item-level information follows.
