Description:

A set of stereographs published by Realistic Travels, possibly in 1920, from their series "The Great War." The photographs were likely taken by Charles Hilton DeWitt Girdwood, a Canadian-born photographer. In 1908, Girdwood founded Realistic Travels as a photo agency and publisher specializing in stereoscopic photography. Girdwood spent several months during World War I photographing Indian and British troops, and those photographs were used in several stereograph sets, including "The Great War." The series was published as a set of 500 gelatin silver stereographs on curved cards, with publication information and a caption printed on the recto. The set was stored in five boxes created to look like books, with a title and publisher printed on the "spines." The scenes depicted include troops, daily life, parades, landscapes, buildings ruined by war, artillery, and military equipment, mostly from locations in France and Belgium, though there are a few taken in Africa. The Ransom Center's set lacks numbers 311, 358, 364, and 381, and it contains two copies of number 445.
