Description:

Set of 97 stereoscopic prints, which were published by Underwood & Underwood, originally contained in a case made to look like two books. One each "spine" of the container, the title "Greece through the Stereoscope" and "Volume I" and "Volume II" are printed. Each stereograph is mounted on a curved card with a title, set number, and publication information printed on the recto. The images all bear a copyright date between 1897 and 1904. Some cards also have a longer narrative description printed on the back, and/or the title in six languages. Most of the cards are dark grey, but some are buff, indicating that the current set was created from at least two, possibly multiple, sets. The set originally contained 100 images, but this set is missing three. In 1907, Underwood & Underwood published an accompanying book that described each of the stereographs and included maps and plans, compiled and written by Dr. Rufus B. Richardson, a professor of Greek and Classical Studies. He was the director of the expedition that produced the images. The images include scenes from ancient temples, statuary, landscapes, people, and cities.
