Description:

Published stereographs, entitled World War Through the Stereoscope (Meadville, Penn.:Keystone View Company, 1926), consisting of 466 silver gelatin stereographs and text by Joseph Mills Hanson. Keystone published several sets of stereographs depicting World War I. The first sets, published in 1919, contained small numbers of cards, 24, 48, and 72, with the larger sets including the images from the smaller sets. In 1923, Keystone began publishing larger sets of World War I stereographs taken from its own negatives, mostly made by Andrew S. Iddings and supplemented with the negatives it acquired from Underwood & Underwood. These larger sets consisted of 100, 200, and 300 images. The larger sets included many, but not all, of the images in the smaller sets. The stereographs depict scenes of trench warfare, graphic battle scenes, towns and countrysides ruined by war, artillery, weaponry, and military vehicles. They show soldiers in formation, at rest, and preparing for battle. The stereographs were published on curved cards with publication information and a caption printed on the recto, and a longer narrative description, written by Major Joseph M. Hanson, printed on the verso. The cards were presented in storage boxes made to look like books, with World War through the Stereoscope printed on the "spines." Each box held 100 cards. The Ransom Center's collection includes cards from multiple sets, and there are several duplicate images published for different sets. They have been arranged according to the catalog number printed with the caption.
