Description:

The Robert Adamson collection consists of 13 loose salted-paper prints by the Scottish photographer, Robert Adamson, between 1842 and circa 1845. Among the collection are several images which were made at Colinton, St. Andrews, and Bonaly, the estate of Lord Cockburn. These photographic prints were made prior to Adamson's association with David Octavius Hill, in circa 1842. Of particular interest are two images of mechanical models made by Adamson which illustrate the type of work in which he was involved prior to photography. Other subjects represented include Cardinal Beaton's Castle and Blackfriar's Chapel at St. Andrews, a group portrait of Lord Cockburn and his family, and D. O. Hill and John Henning in a landscape setting.
