Description:

The collection consists of 131 items from the collection of Stanley B. Burns, MD (American, born 1938). Included are 121 hand-painted tintypes in period frames, 1 carte-de-visite, 1 cabinet card, 7 labels (from manufacturers and marketers), and 1 piece of a wooden box bearing a photo agent's stamp. The earliest tintype dates to the second half of the 1850s, and the latest dates to circa 1910. Included are individual portraits of men, women, and children, group portraits, and postmortem portraits of infants. Period frames styles include Federal Revival, Rococo Revival, Empire Style, Renaissance Revival, Eastlake, Aesthetic, Rustic, Tramp Art, Gothic Revival, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, and Modern.

All items were originally part of the traveling exhibition Forgotten Marriage: The Painted Tintype & The Decorative Frame, 1860-1910: A Lost Chapter in American Portraiture. Additional information about the items can be found in a publication of the same title issued in conjunction with the exhibition (New York: Burns Press, 1995), a copy of which is located in the Center's Library (call number q TR 680 B871 1995 HRC-P).
