Description:

The Ted Spagna Papers and Photography Collection is organized into two series: I. Professional and II. Personal. Materials documenting Spagna’s professional career are organized by discipline into three subseries: Photography, Film, and Academia.

Photography is the largest of the three subseries and contains prints, slides and negatives pertaining to Spagna’s innovations in sleep photography, as well as a small number of portraits. Also found here are business files relating to matters such as the logistical nature of Spagna’s methods, funding, permissions, and biographical materials. This subseries includes three oversize prints, details of which follow.

995:0039:0001 -- [White tiger sleep study], undated. Chromogenic color print, 38 3/4 x 49 1/4 in;
995:0039:0002 -- [Giraffe sleep study], undated. Chromogenic color print, 68 1/4 x 60 1/2 in (frame);
995:0039:0003 -- [Polar bear sleep study], undated. Chromogenic color print, 60 1/4 x 75 1/4 in (frame).

The Film and Academia subseries are both made up of paper materials. The former includes notes and screenplays; the latter consists largely of correspondence and course materials.

Series II is comprised of snapshots, the bulk of which are slides and prints, of friends and family.

Access Restrictions:

Part of this collection is housed off-site and may require up to three business days notice for access in the Ransom Center’s Reading and Viewing Room. A minimum of 48 hours notice is required to page the three oversize photographs (995:0039:0001-0003) to the Reading and Viewing Room. Special permission of the Photography Curator, plus advance notice, is required to view negatives.
