Abelard Press was founded in New York in 1948 by Lew Schwartz. In 1953 the firm merged with Henry Schuman, Inc. to form Abelard-Schuman, Inc. The publishing firm of Abbey Press was founded in New York probably around 1899. Abbey Press published a wide range of fiction and literary criticism between 1900 and 1903. In 1903 the firm filed for bankruptcy. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 49 (1986), p. 3.

A. Williams and Company

Alexander Williams founded his bookselling and publishing firm in Boston in 1855. In 1883 Williams retired and the firm was renamed Cupples, Upham and Company (later J. G. Cupples Company). A. Wessels and Company

The publishing house of A. Wessels and Company was founded in New York in 1900. In 1911 the firm was nearing bankruptcy and was liquidated by a committee of New York publishers. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 46 (1986), p. 379.

A. S. Barnes & Co.

The publishing firm of A. S. Barnes & Co. was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1838 by Alfred S. Barnes. Barnes had various partners in the early years and the firm briefly used names including Alfred S. Barnes and Charles Davies and A. S. Barnes & Burr, before reverting to A. S. Barnes & Co. In 1958 A. S. Barnes & Co. merged with Thomas Yoseloff, Inc. "Yoseloff and his son Julien remained in control of the firm until 1978, when it was acquired by Leisure Dynamics, Incorporated of San Diego, California" (quoted from 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 46 (1986), p. 390). Soon after the acquisition of the firm by Leisure Dynamics, the names of Thomas Yoseloff and A. S. Barnes disappeared as imprints.

Following the union of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1957, the parent church would now be the United Church of Christ.
