| Blakeman and Mason | The firm of D. F. Robinson and Company was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1828, and is the original predecessor firm of Baker and Taylor. The name of Baker and Taylor was adopted in 1885, and between 1828 and 1885 the firm had many names, including Robinson, Pratt and Company; Pratt, Woodford and Company; Farmer, Brace and Company; Blakeman and Mason; Oakley and Mason; Mason, Baker and Pratt; and Baker, Pratt and Company. | Blond & Briggs Ltd | Anthony Blond Ltd became known as Blond & Briggs Ltd from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s (directors: Anthony Blond and Desmond Briggs). The firm then merged with Frederick Muller Ltd to form Muller, Blond & White Ltd. | Boni and Gaer | Charles Boni left the publishing firm of Albert and Charles Boni (q.v.) in 1930 to set up the Living American Art Company. In 1946 he returned to publishing and founded the firm of Boni and Gaer in partnership with Joseph Gaer. The firm, however, was short-lived and went out of business when Boni left in 1948. | Boni and Liveright | The publishing firm of Boni and Liveright was founded in New York in 1917 by Albert Boni and Horace Liveright. In 1918 business differences between the founders led to a split and (on the flip of a coin) sole ownership of the firm passed to Liveright. In 1928 the name of the firm was changed to Horace Liveright, Inc., and in 1933 it became the Liveright Publishing Corporation. The Liveright Publishing Corporation was acquired by W. W. | Bowes and Bowes Publishers Ltd | Bowes and Bowes Publishers (as opposed to the bookshop of the same name) was part of G. P. Putnam until 1962, when Putnams was purchased by the Bodley Head. | Brentano's | August Brentano founded his bookselling and publishing firm in New York in 1885. The firm went into receivership in 1933, and was broken up. Most of the publishing business was sold to Coward-McCann; rights in Brentano's publications of George Bernard Shaw were acquired by Dodd, Mead; the bookselling business was then reformed, and is now part of the Borders group. | Brewer and Warren, Inc. | The publishing firm of Brewer and Warren, Inc. was established in 1930 in New York as the successor firm to Payson and Clarke (q.v.). In 1931, the firm changed its name to Brewer, Warren and Putnam, and in 1932 it was purchased by Harcourt, Brace & Company.
