Macmillan Inc. | The Macmillan Company of New York was sold by the Macmillan family in 1950-51. After a merger with Crowell-Collier in 1960, the firm became Macmillan Inc. in 1973. Macmillan Inc. was purchased by Robert Maxwell in 1988 and after the collapse of the Maxwell businesses, the firm's ownership was much divided. The largest proportion of the residual rights rests with Simon & Schuster (www.simonsays.com), but Macmillan General Reference was acquired by Wiley; the Macmillan School list now belongs to McGraw-Hill; the Macmillan College list belongs to Pearson; and Macmillan Library Reference belongs to Thomson Gale. Macrae Smith Company | The Macrae Smith Company was established in Philadelphia in 1925 by Durant L. Macrae and Allan M. Smith as the successor firm to the George W. Jacobs Company (q.v.). Durant L. Madison Book Company | The Madison Book Company was founded in Chicago in 1902 by Frank K. Reilly and Sumner C. Britton. In 1904 the firm's name was changed to Reilly and Britton Publishing Company. Britton left the firm in 1916, and from 1919 William F. Lee became a full partner and the firm became Reilly and Lee Publishing Company. Maunsel and Roberts | The Irish publishing firm of Maunsel and Roberts began trading as Maunsel and Co. in 1905. It changed its name to Maunsel and Roberts in 1920, and closed down through bankruptcy in 1925. McBride, Nast and Company | Robert Medill McBride founded his first publishing company in New York in 1910 and named it McBride, Winston and Company. In 1911 Condé Nast acquired the principal financial interest in the firm and it was renamed McBride, Nast and Company. Nast left the firm in 1915 and it was then renamed Robert M. McClure, Phillips and Company | The publishing firm of McClure, Phillips and Company was founded in 1900 after the dissolution of Doubleday & McClure. The founders were Samuel S. McClure and John S. Phillips. In 1907 Phillips withdrew and the firm continued briefly as the McClure Company. In 1908 McClure sold his book publishing interest to Doubleday, Page. McGraw Publishing Company | James H. McGraw began working in publishing in 1884, and purchased the 'American Journal of Railway Appliances' in 1888.
