Lydia R. BaileyThe Bailey family printing and publishing firm was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1772 and moved to Philadelphia in 1778. The firm was first named Francis Bailey, and became F. and R. Bailey in 1797. From 1808 the firm traded as Lydia R. Bailey. It went out of business in 1861. P. F. Collier & Son'Collier's Weekly' was founded in 1888 (as 'Collier's Once A Week') and formed the early basis of the publishing house of P. F. Collier & Son. Peter Fenelon Collier died in 1909. In 1919 P. F. Collier & Son was purchased by Crowell and the firm was renamed Crowell-Collier Publishing Company. Crowell-Collier was purchased by the Macmillan Company of New York in 1960. Peter F. Cunningham and SonPeter F. Cunningham founded his publishing firm in Philadelphia around 1860. In 1873 the firm became Peter F. Cunningham and Son. In 1908 it was purchased by P. J. R. F. Fenno and CompanyR. F. Fenno founded his publishing firm in New York in 1885. In 1929 Fenno retired from the firm and it was renamed Diehl, Landau and Pettit (q.v.). Diehl, Landau and Pettit subsequently became the Landau Book Company. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 49 (1986), p. 161, which names Louis Landau as the President of the firm in 1986.2009

RivingtonThe publishing firm of the Rivington family was founded in the early eighteenth century. It was sold to Longman in 1890, on the retirement of Francis Hansard Rivington. There was, however, another firm founded by Septimus Rivington which was active in publishing from 1897. The principal Rivington rights remained with Longman. S. Fischer VerlagThe German publishing firm of S. Fischer Verlag was founded by Samuel Fischer in 1886. In the 1960s the firm was acquired by Deutscher Bücherbund, part of the Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH. Although Deutscher Bücherbund was sold by Holtzbrinck to Kirch in 1989, S. The firm of Scott Foresman & Co. was purchased by Time Inc. in 1985 and then sold to Harper & Row in 1989. News Corporation incorporated Scott Foresman into HarperCollins Educational Publishers and then sold HarperCollins Educational to Addison-Wesley in 1996.
