Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.Alfred A. Knopf founded his publishing house in New York in 1915. The library and archive of the firm were acquired by the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin, in 1959. In 1960 the firm was sold to Random House, which is now owned by Bertelsmann. ArtariaArtaria is a historic Austrian music publishing firm, founded in 1765, publisher of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Bergin & GarveyThe publishing firm of Bergin & Garvey was acquired by Greenwood Publishing Group in 1989. Bernard Geis AssociatesBernard Geis founded his own publishing house in New York in 1958. In the 1960s the firm published a number of controversial titles; many of its backers withdrew their support; and Random House discontinued its distribution of Geis Associates books. The following passage is taken from the obituary of Bernard Geis, New York Times, 10 January 2001: "In 1971, the company filed for bankruptcy protection. The company's books were subsequently published by a variety of other publishing houses under the Geis imprint. Its last book was published in 1995."2008
Blackbirch PressBlackbirch Graphics was founded in 1979 and became Blackbirch Press in 1992. The firm was purchased in 2001 by the Thomson Gale division of the Thomson Corporation. See www.gale.com.2006
Boni and GaerCharles Boni left the publishing firm of Albert and Charles Boni (q.v.) in 1930 to set up the Living American Art Company. In 1946 he returned to publishing and founded the firm of Boni and Gaer in partnership with Joseph Gaer. The firm, however, was short-lived and went out of business when Boni left in 1948. Carroll & GrafThe publishing firm of Carroll & Graf was founded in 1982 by Kent Carroll and Herman Graf, and subsequently became an imprint of Avalon. Following the acquisition of Avalon by the Perseus Books Group in 2007, the Carroll & Graf imprint was closed down. See www.perseusbooks.com.2008
CDG Books CanadaThe firm of CDG Books Canada published the 'For Dummies' series and other educational works in Canada. In 2001-02, as part of the acquisition of Hungry Minds by Wiley, CDG Books Canada was acquired by John Wiley & Sons Canada Ltd and Gage Learning Corporation. Wiley was unable to purchase the whole firm because of Canadian regulatory laws, but became the publisher of 'For Dummies' in Canada. CDG Books Canada was closed down in 2002. See ca.wiley.com.2008
