George H. Doran CompanyThe George H. Doran Company merged with Doubleday in 1927 to form Doubleday, Doran "the largest publishing concern in the English-speaking world" (Random House website). Doubleday, Doran was renamed Doubleday & Company in 1946 and is now part of Random House. Random House is owned by Bertelsmann. George Newnes LimitedGeorge Newnes began his publishing firm with the publication of 'Tit-Bits' in 1881. George Newnes Limited was one of three companies which merged in 1963 to form IPC (International Publishing Corporation). IPC was purchased by the Reed Group in 1970, and then by a Cinven-backed consortium in 1998, before being purchased by AOL Time Warner in 2001. George Routledge & SonsGeorge Routledge began publishing in 1836 and founded his publishing company George Routledge & Co. in 1851. After briefly being known as Routledge, Warne & Routledge, it became George Routledge & Sons in 1865. In 1912 George Routledge & Sons merged with Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. to form Routledge & Kegan Paul. The Routledge Group was purchased by the Taylor & Francis Group in 1998. George Webb BookbindersThe firm of George Webb Bookbinders (including its wholly owned subsidiary Samuel Bagster & Sons Ltd) was sold to Marshall, Morgan and Scott in 1973. Marshall, Morgan and Scott merged with Pickering & Inglis in the mid-1980s to form Marshall Pickering. Georges CharpentierThe publisher Georges Charpentier (1846-1905) was the son of the publisher Gervais Charpentier. After being fired by his father, he began working for the firm of Maurice Dreyfous, whose authors included Émile Zola. In the late 1870s, Charpentier formed his own publishing house, initially to publish 'La vie moderne', but soon becoming Zola's principal publisher. In 1890 the firm changed its name from Georges Charpentier to G. Charpentier & E. Fasquelle. In 1896 Eugène Fasquelle became sole owner of the firm, although he continued to use the Charpentier name for many years. In 1957 the firm of Fasquelle was purchased by Hachette. In 1959 Fasquelle was merged with another recent Hachette acquisition, Grasset, to form Editions Grasset & Fasquelle, which is still based in Paris. See www.hachette.com and www.grasset.fr. 2008
Ginn & CompanyGinn & Company was founded in the 1880s as an education publishing house. The firm was purchased in 1985-86 by Simon & Schuster.
