Barse and HopkinsThe publishing firm of Barse and Hopkins was founded in New York in 1909 by William J. Barse and John H. Hopkins. In 1928 Hopkins left the firm to become a literary agent and it continued as Barse and Company. Barse and Company went bankrupt in 1932 and its stock was acquired by Grosset & Dunlap. Bell & Hyman LtdBell & Hyman Ltd was formed in 1977 when the firm of George Bell & Sons Ltd was sold to Robin Hyman. In 1986 Bell & Hyman Ltd merged with George Allen & Unwin to form Unwin Hyman. In 1990 Unwin Hyman was sold to HarperCollins, part of News Corporation. See www.newscorp.com. 2008
Bodley HeadThe Bodley Head was founded in 1887 as a partnership between Charles Elkin Mathews and John Lane. John Lane became the sole owner in 1894. In 1956 the firm was bought by Max Reinhardt, who in turn sold it to Random House in 1987. Bruce HumphriesThe publishing firm of Bruce Humphries was founded in Boston in 1930 when a number of local firms merged, including the Poet Lore Company and the Four Seas Company. ButterworthsThe legal publishing firm of Butterworths was founded by Henry Butterworth in 1818. Butterworths was absorbed into the International Publishing Corporation in 1965, and sold by IPC to the Reed Group in 1970. Century HutchinsonCentury Publishing was founded in 1982 by Anthony Cheetham and others. In 1985 Century purchased Hutchinson from London Weekend Television and the firm of Century Hutchinson was formed. Century Hutchinson was purchased by Random House UK in 1989. Random House UK was known as the "Random Century Group Limited" from 1989 to 1992, when it was renamed "Random House UK Limited". Chapman and Hall LtdThe publishing firm of Chapman and Hall was founded in 1830. The firm merged with Methuen in 1938. See Arthur Waugh: 'A hundred years of publishing: being the story of Chapman & Hall Ltd' (1930). With Methuen, Chapman & Hall subsequently became part of Associated Book Publishers. See the FOB entry for Associated Book Publishers. It is believed that any surviving Chapman & Hall rights would belong to the Thomson Corporation and not to Methuen.2008

Chelsea HouseA first publishing firm called Chelsea House was founded in New York in 1921, as a subsidiary of Street and Smith (q.v.), and went out of existence in 1933. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 46 (1986), p. 82. The name was revived in the 1980s for the founding of a literary publishing firm, closely associated with the work of the critic Harold Bloom. In 2005 this Chelsea House was sold by Haights Cross Communications to Facts on File, Inc., which is owned by Infobase Publishing. See www.infobasepublishing.com.2009
