Tolley Publishing CompanyThe Tolley Publishing Company was founded in 1916 by Charles H. Tolley and operated as a legal and business publishing house until 1996. Ullstein VerlagUllstein Verlag was founded by the Ullstein family in Berlin in 1903. In 1959 Ullstein Verlag was acquired by the Axel Springer group. From 2000 to 2003, Ullstein was part of the Axel Springer book division called Ullstein Heyne List. Ullstein Heyne List was broken up in 2003 and Ullstein was sold to Bonnier AB of Stockholm. Unwin HymanUnwin Hyman was the name given to the firm formed by the merger of George Allen & Unwin and Bell & Hyman in 1986. Unwin Hyman was purchased by HarperCollins in 1990. Although HarperCollins subsequently sold the Unwin Hyman academic division to Routledge, the UK rights of George Allen & Unwin remain in the ownership of HarperCollins, which in turn is owned by News Corporation. W. H. & L. Collingridge LtdThe publishing firm of W. H. & L. Collingridge Ltd was founded in or before the 1840s, initially publishing religious works, but later specialising in horticulture and botany. In the 1960s the firm was purchased by Paul Hamlyn, and later became part of the Hamlyn Group and the Octopus Group. W. H. AllenW. H. Allen is now part of Virgin Books. In the early nineteenth century, W. H. Allen specialised in books on Indian subjects, but gradually the firm developed into a general publisher. W. H. Allen became a Howard & Wyndham company, but Howard & Wyndham floated off the company in 1984, retaining a 38 per cent share. The W. H. Allen publishing house acquired Virgin Books in 1986, but was then acquired by the Virgin parent company from 1987 (67 per cent purchased) to 1991, when the company was renamed Virgin Publishing. W. H. Freeman and CompanyThe publishing firm of W. H. Freeman and Company was founded by William H. Freeman in 1946. In 1986 W. H. Walter H. Baker CompanyGeorge M. Baker purchased the play division of Herbert Sweet and Company (q.v.) in 1872 and renamed the firm George M. Baker and Company. The firm was managed by Baker's brother Walter H. Baker, and was renamed the Walter H. Baker Company in 1892. The firm now trades as Baker's Plays. William Heinemann LtdWilliam Heinemann began his publishing business in 1890. By the end of 1957, control of William Heinemann Ltd belonged to Tillings. Tillings was acquired in 1983 by BTR, who then sold the Heinemann Group to Octopus Publishing in 1985. Octopus was in turn taken over by Reed Books in 1987. In 1997 Reed Elsevier sold a number of its companies, including William Heinemann Ltd, to Random House. William Heinemann is now part of Random House UK, which is owned by Bertelsmann.
