Hamish HamiltonHamish Hamilton founded his own publishing company in 1931. He sold the firm to Thomson Publications in 1966. Hamish Hamilton Ltd was bought by Penguin UK in March 1985 as part of their purchase of Thomson Books. Penguin UK is part of Pearson plc. See www.pearson.com. 2008
HamlynPaul Hamlyn sold his first publishing firm in 1964, and went on to form the Octopus Publishing Group, of which Hamlyn was a major imprint. The Octopus Group was purchased by Hachette in 2001. See www.hachette.com and www.octopus-publishing.co.uk.2008
Hamming-Whitman CompanyHamming-Whitman Company was a publishing firm based in Chicago. In 1916 the firm defaulted on its bills and was taken over by its principal creditor Western Printing and Lithographing Company (later Western Publishing Company). Western moved the firm to its own headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin, and renamed it Whitman Publishing Company. By the 1980s the name Whitman was no longer being used for publishing, but continued for games and puzzles until Western went out of business. Harborough Publishing Co. LtdHarborough Publishing was a publisher of popular fiction in the post-war period. In 1948, the firm was acquired by Raymond and Lilian Locker. In 1998 Harcourt Brace & Company was acquired by Reed Elsevier, and in December 2007 Reed Elsevier sold Harcourt Education, Harcourt Trade and Greenwood-Heinemann to Houghton Mifflin. Harleyford BooksHarleyford Books was purchased by Arms & Armour in 1981. Arms & Armour was purchased by Cassell in 1987. Cassell was purchased by Hachette in 1998, and subsequently divided.
