| Cleaver-Hume Press Ltd | Cleaver-Hume Press Ltd was founded in the 1940s as a publisher mostly of scientific and technical works. In 1963 the firm entered into an alliance with Macmillan UK and by 1967 had been absorbed by Macmillan. An article in 'Macmillan News', December 1963, suggested that the firm might be renamed Macmillan & Cleaver, but this does not appear to have happened. | Clowes and Clowes | William Clowes founded his own printing and publishing company in London in 1803. In 1873, two other family members, both called William Clowes, established the firm of Clowes and Clowes in Beccles, Suffolk. In 1880 the Suffolk and London companies merged to form William Clowes Limited. William Clowes Limited is still trading and in 2004 the head office in Suffolk moved from Beccles to Ellough. | Crosby Lockwood & Co. | The publishing firm of Lockwood & Co was established by Mark Lockwood in the early nineteenth century. On his death in the 1850s his son Crosby Lockwood took over the running of the company and changed the name of the firm to Crosby Lockwood & Co. Crosby Lockwood remained an independent firm until it was acquired by Granada Publishing in 1972. | Cupples and Leon | The publishing house of Cupples and Leon was founded in 1902. The firm was acquired by Platt and Munk in 1956, and Platt and Munk was in turn acquired by Grosset & Dunlap in 1977. In 1982 Grosset & Dunlap was purchased by G. P. Putnam's Sons (of the Putnam Berkley Group). Putnam Berkley was bought by Penguin in 1997, and is part of the Pearson Group. | Curwen Press | The music publishing firm of Curwen Press was founded by John Curwen (1816-1880) and was originally known as J. Curwen & Sons Ltd. In 1969 the firm was purchased by the US publishers Crowell, Collier & Macmillan.
