M. J. Ivers and CompanyThe publishing firm of M. J. Ivers and Company was founded in New York around 1882. In 1898 it acquired the assets of the firm of Beadle and Adams, including the Dime Library. M. W. DoddThe publishing firm of Taylor and Dodd was founded by John S. Taylor and Moses Woodruff Dodd in New York in 1839. In 1840 Dodd bought out Taylor and renamed the firm M. W. Dodd. In 1870 the management of the firm was taken over by Dodd's nephew Edward S. Mead and in 1876 the firm was renamed Dodd, Mead and Company. M. Witmark & SonsThe music publishing firm of M. Witmark & Sons was established in New York City in 1885. In 1928 the firm was purchased by Warner Brothers Pictures, and it is identified as one of the predecessor firms of Warner/Chappell Music, Inc. in the history pages of www.warnerchappell.com.2007
Macdonald & Co.The publishing firm of Macdonald & Co. was acquired by Robert Maxwell and became part of the British Printing & Communications Corporation, later the Maxwell Communications Corporation. In 1989, Maxwell sold Macdonald's Children's Books and Macdonald Educational to Simon & Schuster. All the Simon & Schuster educational businesses were bought by Pearson in 1998, forming the basis of Pearson Education. After Robert Maxwell's death in 1991, much of the remainder of the Macdonald firm was bought by Little, Brown UK, while titles published by Macdonald Children's Books were acquired by Hodder Children's Books. Macdonald PublishersMacdonald Publishers (not to be confused with Macdonald & Co.) was the publishing firm of Callum Macdonald. The firm was based in Edinburgh and published mostly Scottish poetry. Macgibbon and Kee LtdThe publishing firm of Macgibbon and Kee was founded in London in 1949. The firm developed close links with Rupert Hart-Davis Ltd (q.v.) and, like Hart-Davis, was acquired by Granada Publishing (in 1968). In 1972 Granada created Hart-Davis, Macgibbon Ltd, although Macgibbon and Kee remained registered as a company. The archives of Macgibbon and Kee are in the University of Glasgow Library, and the following sentence is taken from their catalogue: "The company appears to have been dissolved in c.1983 when Granada sold its publishing interests to the Scottish publishers William Collins, Sons & Co Ltd, Glasgow." Macmillan Inc.The Macmillan Company of New York was sold by the Macmillan family in 1950-51. After a merger with Crowell-Collier in 1960, the firm became Macmillan Inc. in 1973. Macmillan Inc. was purchased by Robert Maxwell in 1988 and after the collapse of the Maxwell businesses, the firm's ownership was much divided. The largest proportion of the residual rights rests with Simon & Schuster (www.simonsays.com), but Macmillan General Reference was acquired by Wiley; the Macmillan School list now belongs to McGraw-Hill; the Macmillan College list belongs to Pearson; and Macmillan Library Reference belongs to Thomson Gale. The UK Macmillan company, owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, also has a US operation (see us.macmillan.com).2009
Macrae Smith CompanyThe Macrae Smith Company was established in Philadelphia in 1925 by Durant L. Macrae and Allan M. Smith as the successor firm to the George W. Jacobs Company (q.v.). Durant L.
