| Adlard Coles Nautical | Adlard Coles Ltd was founded as Robert Ross & Co. Ltd in the 1930s. In 1962 the firm was purchased by Rupert Hart-Davis Ltd, which eventually became part of HarperCollins. | American News Company | The American News Company was founded in 1864 in New York. In 1969 the firm was renamed Ancorp National Services. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 49 (1986), pp. 10-11. From the 1970s the firm concentrated on its food-service and newstand operations and had little to do with the book trade. | Blackie & Son | The firm of Blackie & Son was founded by John Blackie in 1807. Most surviving Blackie rights now belong to the Pearson Group. The following quotation is taken from the pamphlet 'The firm of Blackie & Son and some of their children's books' by Morna Daniels (1999). "In 1991 the academic titles went to Blackie Academic and Professional and the school titles were acquired by Nelson and Sons, who published them under the imprint Nelson Blackie until 1995 after which they dropped the name Blackie. The children's titles were acquired by Blackie Children's Books, part of the Penguin group at 27 Wrights Lane (owned by Pearsons) but the separate imprint disappeared after 1995 and the same authors appear under the Puffin imprint. Blackie sold the Flower Fairies list to Warne, another Pearson acquisition, in 1989." | 2008 |

| Browne and Nolan | The Irish publishing firm of Browne and Nolan was renamed Longmans, Browne and Nolan around 1969. Longmans, Browne and Nolan was incorporated into the Educational Company of Ireland (EDCO) around 1972. EDCO became a Jefferson Smurfit company and is now part of the Smurfit Kappa Group. | Doubleday & Company | In 1897 Frank Nelson Doubleday and Samuel McClure founded the publishing house of Doubleday & McClure. From 1900 the firm became Doubleday, Page & Company. In 1927 Doubleday merged with the George H. Doran Company and became Doubleday, Doran. The firm was renamed Doubleday & Company in 1946.
