Longmans, Browne and NolanThe Irish publishing firm of Browne and Nolan was renamed Longmans, Browne and Nolan around 1969. Longmans, Browne and Nolan was incorporated into the Educational Company of Ireland (EDCO) around 1972. EDCO became a Jefferson Smurfit company and is now part of the Smurfit Kappa Group. Macmillan Inc.The Macmillan Company of New York was sold by the Macmillan family in 1950-51. After a merger with Crowell-Collier in 1960, the firm became Macmillan Inc. in 1973. Macmillan Inc. was purchased by Robert Maxwell in 1988 and after the collapse of the Maxwell businesses, the firm's ownership was much divided. The largest proportion of the residual rights rests with Simon & Schuster (www.simonsays.com), but Macmillan General Reference was acquired by Wiley; the Macmillan School list now belongs to McGraw-Hill; the Macmillan College list belongs to Pearson; and Macmillan Library Reference belongs to Thomson Gale. The UK Macmillan company, owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, also has a US operation (see us.macmillan.com).2009
McBride, Nast and CompanyRobert Medill McBride founded his first publishing company in New York in 1910 and named it McBride, Winston and Company. In 1911 Condé Nast acquired the principal financial interest in the firm and it was renamed McBride, Nast and Company. Nast left the firm in 1915 and it was then renamed Robert M. McBride and Company, which indicates that the firm was purchased by Outlet Book Company in 1949 and that Outlet is now part of Random House (www.randomhouse.com).2008
N. A. G. PressN. A. G. Press was established as a publisher of "horological and gemmological" books. The firm was acquired by Robert Hale Limited in 1993. See www.halebooks.com.2008
N. CoverlyNathaniel Coverly founded his publishing firm in Boston in 1770, and moved the firm around various locations, mostly in Massachusetts, until 1803. Nation'The Nation' was founded in 1907. In 1921 it took over 'The Athenaeum' and became 'The Nation and Athenaeum'. National Book CompanyThe National Book Company was founded in 1958 by Sam Moore. In 1969 it was incorporated into Thomas Nelson Publishers, the US subsidiary of Thomas Nelson, when that subsidiary was purchased by Sam Moore from the Thomson Organization.
