Thomas Nelson	The firm of Thomas Nelson was founded in Edinburgh in 1798, and continued as an independent business until it was acquired by the Thomson Organization in 1960. In 1969 the firm was divided. The US subsidiary was sold to Sam Moore, and continues as a Christian publishing house based in Nashville (see www.thomasnelson.com). The UK firm of Thomas Nelson was merged with Stanley Thornes in 2000 to form Nelson Thornes. Nelson Thornes is now part of the international Wolters Kluwer group. See www.nelsonthornes.com.	2008
Van Nostrand Reinhold	The publishing firm of Van Nostrand Reinhold (VNR) was acquired by Litton Industries in 1968, and then purchased by Thomson Publishing in 1981. In 1997 VNR was sold by Thomson to Wiley. See 'New York Times', 10 October 1997, and www.wiley.com.	2008
Weidenfeld & Nicolson	Weidenfeld & Nicolson was founded by George Weidenfeld and Nigel Nicolson in 1949. The following passage is taken from the Orion website (http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/history.aspx): "The Orion Publishing Group Limited was founded in 1991. Soon after incorporation, Orion began negotiations with Lord Weidenfeld and acquired Weidenfeld & Nicolson as the nucleus of a new, entrepreneurial publishing group." The Orion Publishing Group was bought by Hachette in 1998, but continues to trade under its own name, with titles still appearing under the imprint of Weidenfeld & Nicolson.	2008
Williams & Norgate	The publishing firm of Williams & Norgate was founded by Sydney Williams and Frederick Norgate and flourished from the 1830s to the 1950s. According to 'Publishing and bookselling' by Frank Arthur Mumby and Ian Norrie (5th ed., 1974, p. 472) the firm was then acquired by Ernest Benn.
