Lion Books, Inc.Lion Books was a small publishing house founded by Martin Goodman in New York in 1949. The firm was briefly first known as Select Publications. Both Select Publications and Lion Books used the imprint Red Circle Books. in 1957 Lion Books was acquired by New American Library. Liveright Publishing CorporationThe publishing firm of Boni and Liveright was founded in New York in 1917 by Albert Boni and Horace Liveright. In 1918 business differences between the founders led to a split and (on the flip of a coin) sole ownership of the firm passed to Liveright. In 1928 the name of the firm was changed to Horace Liveright, Inc., and in 1933 it became the Liveright Publishing Corporation. The Liveright Publishing Corporation was acquired by W. W. LLP Professional PublicationsPublications with the imprint LLP Professional began to appear in the 1980s. The firm was previously known as Lloyds of London Press. LongmanThomas Longman founded his publishing house in 1724. The firm remained a family business until 1970, when it was merged with Penguin Books. By the time of the death of the last family chairman, Mark Longman, in 1972, the firm was known as Pearson Longman. It remains part of the Pearson Group. Lothrop Publishing CompanyLothrop Publishing Company was founded as D. Lothrop and Company in Boston in 1868. In 1904 the firm went bankrupt and was purchased by the publishing firm of Lee and Shepard. Loujon PressLoujon Press was the private press of Louise and Jon Webb, and produced collectors' works of authors including Henry Miller and Charles Bukowski. See the account of the firm by Jeff Weddle in 'Publishing history' 58 (2005). Jon Webb died in 1971; in 2005 Louise Webb was living in Slidell, Louisiana.2008
Macdonald PublishersMacdonald Publishers (not to be confused with Macdonald & Co.) was the publishing firm of Callum Macdonald. The firm was based in Edinburgh and published mostly Scottish poetry. Macmillan Inc.The Macmillan Company of New York was sold by the Macmillan family in 1950-51. After a merger with Crowell-Collier in 1960, the firm became Macmillan Inc. in 1973. Macmillan Inc. was purchased by Robert Maxwell in 1988 and after the collapse of the Maxwell businesses, the firm's ownership was much divided. The largest proportion of the residual rights rests with Simon & Schuster (www.simonsays.com), but Macmillan General Reference was acquired by Wiley; the Macmillan School list now belongs to McGraw-Hill; the Macmillan College list belongs to Pearson; and Macmillan Library Reference belongs to Thomson Gale. The UK Macmillan company, owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, also has a US operation (see us.macmillan.com).2009
