Nonesuch PressThe Nonesuch Press was founded by Francis Meynell and others in 1923. Meynell became the sole rights-owner in 1951. Nonesuch Press Limited was formed in 1953, with representation on the board from the Bodley Head. Nonesuch Press ceased operations in 1968 and Meynell died in 1975. Pear Tree PressThe Pear Tree Press was founded by James Guthrie in 1899 and remained in his personal ownership. The Pear Tree Press went out of existence when James Guthrie died in 1952.2006
Penn Publishing CompanyThe Penn Publishing Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1889 by Charles C. Shoemaker. The firm went bankrupt in 1941 and its assets were acquired by the Harlem Book Company, which restarted the firm as William Penn Publishing Corporation. Porpoise PressThe Porpoise Press was founded in Edinburgh in 1922. In 1930 the firm was taken over by Faber & Faber, whilst retaining editorial independence. In 1939 Faber & Faber decided to close down the Porpoise Press, whilst retaining its backlist of Scottish literary works.2006
PrestonThe music publishing firm of Preston (or Preston & Son) was founded by John Preston in the 1770s and subsequently managed by his son Thomas Preston. The firm was purchased by Coventry & Hollier around 1834, and much of the business of Coventry & Hollier was purchased by Novello in 1849 and 1851.
