Rudd and CarletonThe publishing firm of Rudd and Carleton was founded in New York in 1857 as the successor firm to Livermore and Rudd. In 1857 Edward Livermore retired from the firm and its owners became Edward P. Rudd, his father George Rudd and George Washington Carleton. S. W. Partridge and Co.The printing and publishing firm of S. W. Partridge and Co. was founded in 1850. According to 'The Writers' and Artists' Year Book 1939', in 1930 the firm was purchased by A. & C. Black. S. W. Partridge and Co. continued publishing until World War II, but appears to have been discontinued during the war. See the FOB entry for A. & C. Black.2010
S. W. Tilton and CompanyStephen Willis Tilton founded the publishing firm of S. W. Tilton and Company in the 1870s, after the closure in 1874 of J. E. Tilton and Company (q.v.). Publications of S. W. Tilton and Company have been traced for the 1870s and 1880s but not later. According to the website www.tilton.org, Stephen Willis Tilton was born in 1833 and died in 1911.2021
Secker & WarburgSecker & Warburg was founded as Martin Secker in 1910 and purchased by Fredric Warburg in 1936. In the early 1980s the firm became part of the Heinemann Group, which in turn was taken over by Reed International and then by Random House. Random House was purchased by Bertelsmann AG in 1998 and now functions as a "corporate division" of Bertelsmann. See www.bertelsmann.com. Swan SonnenscheinWilliam Swan Sonnenschein formed his first publishing firm, W. Swan Sonnenschein & Allen, in 1878. From 1882 this became W. Swan Sonnenschein & Co. In 1911 the Swan Sonnenschein company merged with George Allen & Co., and in 1914 the merged firm became George Allen & Unwin Ltd. See the FOB entry for George Allen & Unwin.2006
Ticknor, Reed and FieldsWilliam D. Tickner was a partner in Allen and Ticknor (1832-1834). He then ran his own publishing company in Boston from 1834. In 1843 John Reed and James T. Fields became partners in the firm of William D. Ticknor and Company, and in 1849 the firm was renamed Ticknor, Reed and Fields. Reed withdrew from the company in 1854 and it continued initially as Ticknor and Fields. Transworld PublishingThe firm of Transworld Publishing was the London publisher of imprints including Corgi and Bantam from the 1950s to the 1990s. From the late 1970s parts of the firm began to be acquired by Bertelsmann, and Transworld is now part of Bertelsmann's Random House Group.
