Scope and Contents

This collection of the papers and correspondence of American novelist and short story writer Edward Newhouse consists primarily of incoming correspondence from publishers and contemporary notables such as James Gould Cozzens, George Oppenheimer, Margaret Cousins, Bill Maxwell, Granville Hicks, and Vincent Sheean; contracts, royalty statements, and reviews of published works; two typescripts from a novel and an unpublished short story; three photographs of Newhouse; newspaper clippings regarding his military career; a transcript of a biographical interview; and a tribute to Newhouse written by Smith.
The collection is arranged in two series: I. Works and Related Material, 1934-1965 (2 boxes) and II. Correspondence and Other Papers, 1935-2002 (1 box).
Most of the materials in Series I. are publishing house contracts and royalty statements, reviews, publishers’ correspondence and editing notes, and general correspondence relating to Newhouse’s novels and short stories. There is one corrected typescript for The Temptation of Roger Heriott (1954) and an additional typescript for an unpublished short story, Remembered Joys Are Never Passed, an autobiographical account of Newhouse’s service in the Army Air Forces. Almost all of the correspondence is incoming to the author. Also present are two German language journals and tearsheets from U.S. magazines in which various short stories were published.
Series II. Correspondence and Other Papers consists of incoming correspondence from James Gould Cozzens (1946-1975), a lifelong friend whom Newhouse perhaps met when both were majors under the Chief of the Army Air Forces, General Henry H. Arnold; incoming fan mail; incoming correspondence and contracts regarding short stories that were adapted to motion pictures; incoming correspondence from publishers and The New Yorker; and correspondence with Billy B. Smith. The series also includes an interview of Newhouse regarding Stephen Brunauer, a chemist and probable family friend who was caught up in the McCarthyism of the 1940s; materials relating to Newhouse, such as an Authors Guild membership certificate and copyright pamphlets; military-career materials including two photographs and newspaper clippings relating to a scandal of commissioned officers of the armed services who were communists; photocopies of note cards with miscellaneous author quotations; and a tribute written by Billy B. Smith accompanied by a photograph of a young Newhouse.
