Scope and Contents

The T. E. (Thomas Edward) Lawrence Literary File consists of 684 items, the majority of which are photographic prints depicting Lawrence's travels and activities in Arabia, including the Hejaz Railway and the Wejh-Aqaba expedition via the Wadi Sirhan. In addition to portraits of Lawrence, there are also views of his birthplace in Wales, residences in England, grave, and memorials, as well as views of crusader castles in France and Syria taken by him in circa 1907-1909. Items P1-P488 are from the B. H. Liddell-Hart Collection, and P490-P552 are from the Theodora Duncan Collection. Almost all of the photographs from the Liddell-Hart Collection have inscriptions in Lawrence's hand. He is also identified as the photographer on many of them. An index at the end of this guide lists photographers whose work is featured in this file. Further descriptions of some items may be available in a card catalog in the repository.
This file forms a part of the Literary Files Photography Collection that is comprised of photographs and albums withdrawn from the libraries and/or papers of literary figures, and generally includes portraits and images collected by or of those figures.
