This archive of the British magazine
Bananas dates from its inception in
January 1975 through issue no. 11 in 1978, concurrent with the tenure of editor
Emma Tennant. An invitational announcement by Tennant describes
Bananas as "a new and lively arts
magazine… Our contributors include Alan Sillitoe, Beryl Bainbridge,
Claud Cockburn, Ted Hughes, Elaine Feinstein, Peter Redgrove, Tom Nairn, J. G.
Ballard, Ruth Fainlight, Jenny Joseph, Henri Michaux, Harold Pinter, Hans
Magnus Enzensburger, Milan Kundera, Neil Ascherson, Lorna Sage, Martin
Seymour-Smith. We also find new talent--a third of our published material comes
from previously unpublished young authors." |

in three series: Series I. Production Files, Series II. Correspondence, and
Series III. Financial. |

The production files in Series I. include edited
typescripts for issues 2-11, as well as a selection of oversize layouts and
mechanicals. Correspondence in Series II. includes contributors and
well-wishers, such as Martin Amis, J. G. Ballard, Alan Brownjohn, Angela
Carter, Ruth Fainlight, Miles Gibson, Clive Hodgson, Frances Horovitz, Olwyn
Hughes, James Kirkup, Ian McEwan, Peter Redgrove, Alan Ross, D. S. Savage,
Penelope Shuttle, Stephen Spender, Paul Theroux, Claire Tomalin, and Angus
Wilson. The financial papers in Series III. include receipts, invoices, and
accounts for the period 1975-1977, and by issue. |
