Notes, transcriptions, photocopies, pamphlets, offprints, correspondence, drafts of
articles, essays, presentations, and clippings document Jack P. Dalton’s research
and publications focused on the work of James Joyce. Dalton was an early textual
scholar of Joyce and was highly critical of inaccuracies in published editions
of
Joyce’s work. He vehemently called for a critical edition of Ulysses during the 1960s and 1970s and his work aided Hans Walter
Gabler with Gabler’s 1984 edition of Ulysses based on
original Joyce manuscripts and proofs. Dalton’s papers date from the 1960s to
1970s
and are generally in good condition. Identifying notes created by Robert Fulton
during the processing of the materials remain in or on the folders. |

The materials are arranged in four series: I. Research Materials (11 boxes, 29 note
card boxes); II. Works (6 boxes, 2 note card boxes); III. Correspondence (2 boxes);
and IV. Works By Others (2 folders). |

The Research series is the largest in the papers and is divided into two subseries:
A. James Joyce and B. General. The bulk of the research material is in the James
Joyce subseries and is filed alphabetically by title of work. Within the titles,
materials are filed alphabetically by folder heading. Finnegans Wake and Ulysses are
especially well documented and materials for these two titles include Dalton’s
extensive transcriptions and notes mainly from original Joyce manuscripts at The
State University of New York at Buffalo. Also present in the series are
transcriptions of Joyce correspondence, general reference materials related to
Joyce, and note cards created by Dalton and used by Hans Walter Gabler for his
edition of Ulysses. The General subseries contains a small number of photocopies
documenting texts and bibliographies not related to Joyce. |

The Works series contains offprints, typescript drafts, and photocopies of essays,
journal articles, presentations, reviews, and letters to editors by Dalton. Also
present are small amounts of correspondence and research materials associated
with
specific works. The bulk of the works are in chronological order, followed by
small
groups of undated and unidentified materials. The series includes both published
and
unpublished works with full citations given for the published pieces. |

The Correspondence series consists of seven folders in alphabetical order by
correspondent name, with the exception of two folders labeled “General” and “Unidentified.”
The bulk of the material consists of incoming letters to Dalton from
publishers, editors, and other Joyce scholars, such as T. S. Eliot, William Gaddis,
and Michael Groden. Correspondence is also sometimes present in the Research
Materials and Works series and a location index of all correspondent names is
provided in this finding aid. |

Series IV. Works by Others is the smallest series and consists of two folders of
offprints, many of which are inscribed to Dalton from the various authors. The
works
are filed in alphabetical order by author name. |
