Abstract:
Includes over 2,000 Victorian-era letters to the Times of London, primarily to editors John Thadeus Delane and William Stebbing. The letters
were collected and organized into 13 bound volumes by Stebbing. Among the many notable
correspondents are Matthew Arnold, P. T. Barnum, Robert Browning, Samuel Clemens,
George Cruikshank, Charles Darwin, Benjamin Disraeli, William Gladstone, Thomas Hardy,
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Victor Hugo, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Karl Marx, Dante Gabriel
Rossetti, John Ruskin, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and Walt Whitman. A single index of correspondents
is provided at the end of this finding aid.
