Scope and Contents
Tom Maschler (1933-2020) was a leading figure of modern British Publishing best known for his many years as the editorial director and then managing editor at Jonathon Cape. The first book he bought for Cape was Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, and he worked with many authors including Doris Lessing, Gabriel García Márquez, Thomas Pynchon, John Fowles, Arnold Wesker, and Ian McEwan, among others. | ||
Much of the Tom Maschler Collection of Doris Lessing consists of typescript short stories and related materials prepared for Lessing’s second collection, The Habit of Loving (1957), edited by Maschler. The works represented include "The Eye of God in Paradise," "The Day that Stalin Died," 'Excuse me While I’m Sick by Reggie Jones' which is apparently unpublished, "Flavours of Exile," "Through the Tunnel," "Traitors," "Dialogue," "Debbie and Julie," "The Truth About Billy Newton," and "Wine." Most of the typescripts contain autograph corrections and comments in pencil and ink. The four short letters in the collection are all from Lessing to Maschler, with which she enclosed several stories for him and one for the Paris Review. |
