Scope and Contents

The Carson McCullers Literary File consists of 993 photographic prints, 206 negatives, 17 transparencies, 2 daguerreotypes, and 92 prints in 6 albums. Included are images of McCullers (born Lula Carson Smith) throughout her life, both alone and with others. Subjects include various family members including her husband Reeves, her parents Marguerite and Lamar, her sister Margarita (Rita), and her brother Lamar Jr., and a number of her friends, including Tennessee Williams. Additionally, there are views of her home in Nyack, New York. Also included are a number of images depicting the scenes from staged versions of several of her works.
Many folders include notes regarding identification of the people in the photographs enclosed, likely written by Rita Smith. Several images were found to have duplicate accession numbers, and were renumbered at the end of the sequence, but are housed in the order found. Albums were each given a separate accession number range.
An index at the end of this guide lists photographers whose work is featured in this file.
This collection forms a part of the Literary File Photography Collection, which is comprised of photographs and albums withdrawn from the libraries and/or papers of literary figures, and generally include portraits and images collected by or of those figures.
