Biographical Sketch
| José María Gil Robles was born on November 27, 1898, in Salamanca, Spain. Prior to his public service career, Gil Robles was involved with the Catholic newspaper, El Debate, from 1922 to 1931. He became a deputy in the Cortes Generales of Spain in 1931. He was a leader of the Catholic party, Acción Popular, before he formed a coalition and established the Catholic party, Confederactión Española de Derechas Autónomas (CEDA). Under the Alejandro Lerroux administration, he was minister of war for several months in 1935. After losses in the February 1936 elections, CEDA and Gil Robles lost support from their members. He left for Portugal at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. In 1957, Gil Robles published his first book and would publish fourteen books in total. From 1973 to 1977, he was leader of the Federación Popular Democrática. José María Gil Robles died on September 14, 1980 in Madrid, Spain. | ||
