Biographical Sketch

Florence (Danforth) Hamilton was born in Upper Jay, New York on July 20, 1873. She married Ernest Hamilton around 1890. She was lecture manager and secretary to Edwin Markham, a prominent American poet, from 1920 until he suffered a debilitating stroke in 1936. After Markham's stroke and eventual death, Hamilton published several volumes of her own poetry, lectured on poetry herself, and was an active member of several organizations for poets, including the National League of American Pen Women, the Congress of American Poets, and the American Academy of Poets. Hamilton died in Richmond, Virginia in 1968.
