Grover E. (Grover Elmer) Murray Postcard Photography Collection (Photography Collection
PH-02027). Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Grover E. Murray was a noted geologist who began his career in the oil industry.
He was
a professor of geology at Louisiana State University from 1948 to 1966, and served
as
president of Texas Tech University from 1966 to 1976. This collection consists of
1,415
items (1,401 photographic, photolithographic and photomechanical postcards; 8 souvenir
booklets; 5 packets of black-and-white photographs; and 1 packet of photographic reproductions)
collected by Murray.
The bulk of the postcards are from European countries, specifically England, France,
and
Spain, and vary in subject from architecture to landscapes, genre scenes to art
reproductions. Based on the items bearing postmarks, they date from the 1910s to the
1960s,
the bulk from the 1950s. In keeping with Murray's organizational scheme, the postcards
are
filed alphabetically by country, and Canadian postcards are further subdivided by
territory.
