The J. Frank Dobie Literary File consists of approximately 3,900 photographs, many of which are portraits of Dobie throughout his life, both alone and with others. There are also images of his wife, Bertha McKee, other members of the Dobie family, members of the Byler and Dubose families, various friends and associates, cowboys, and other people. In addition, the file contains views of various places in Texas, including Paisano Ranch and other Dobie family ranches and residences. Other states represented in the file include Montana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. There are also numerous views of Mexico, chiefly from Dobie’s travels there, and a few of Cambridge, England.
This collection forms part of the Literary File Photograph Collection, which is comprised of photographs and albums withdrawn from the libraries and/or papers of literary figures, and generally include portraits and images collected by or of those figures.
Addition materials by and about Dobie can be found at the Harry Ransom Center in the following collections: J. Frank (James Frank) Dobie Papers (MS-01176), the Willie Belle Coker Collection of J. Frank Dobie Personal Effects (PA-00016), and the J. Frank (James Frank) Dobie Art Collection (AR-00067).
