Elisabeth Goss Stevens was born in Rome, New York. She graduated from Wellesley College, and received an MA from Columbia University in Modern Literature. As an artist, Stevens produced etchings, silverpoints, linocuts, and illustrations for her own books, other authors, and various periodicals. As a journalist and critic, she wrote articles and reviews on art, architecture, drama, and film for a number of major national magazines and newspapers, such as
