Description:

The Ray Rector Papers and Photography Collection is comprised of about 200 photographs of ranch life in the Stamford vicinity; SMS Flat Top Ranch; and Pecos rodeo. Additionally the collection contains prints used in the publication Cowboy Life on the Texas Plains: The Photography of Ray Rector (College Station: Texas A&M University Press, 1982), which includes vintage prints by Rector as well as modern prints by his son Tommie (Box 1). Also there are small prints of ranch life, cowboys and activities, which are captioned (Box 2), as well as newspaper clippings, reviews of Ray Rector's book and the exhibit and clippings on Tommie Rector (Box 3).

The portion of the collection consists of prints (982:0083:0001-0042) used in a traveling exhibition of Ray Rector's cowboy photography.

The collection also contains approximately 1,000 nitrate negatives (2000:0060:0001-0006); 42 glass negatives; 7 hand-colored, black-and-white, panoramic prints; 2 small loose prints; and three family keepsake albums (2005:0026:0001-0022, 2005:0027:0000, 2005:0028:0001-0032). The time period represented 1903 to 1933.

One published videotape (999:0021:0180) entitled Rodeo: The Music Video (Cabin Fever Entertainment, 1991) was transferred to the Ransom Center Library. The following five audio cassettes were transferred to the Center's Sound Recordings Collection:

2005:0016:0002 -- Cassette tape: Margaret Rector interview with Bert Johnson, an old time cowboy who worked for Swenson Ranch many years. "Now lives in Arlington, Tex.", 1 May 1978;
2005:0016:0003 -- Cassette tape: Margaret Rector talks with "Rip" Gustavson, old cowboy living in Abilene, Texas, while reviewing box of 75 photos of ranch scenes. The men give their recollections and help identify persons in the photos. There are some interesting tales on these tapes, Aug. 1978.
