Description: |
Photograph album titled Tableaux Vivants. The album is covered in brown leather, and the cover is embossed: “Tableaux Vivants / Osbourne / 1888. / M.C.” The album contains 12 albumen prints and 17 woodbury (or possibly carbon) prints. Gernsheim attributed all the images to Hughes & Mullins, but most of the albumen prints were produced by [?] Richmond, as seen from the inscriptions on the lower corners of these images. The album is accompanied by a program for another tableaux vivant at Osbourne, staged on Friday, January 24th, 1890. Inside the album, Helmut Gersheim wrote: "28 early flash-light photographs by / Hughes & Mullins, Ryde, I[sle] of W[ight].” and “Minnie Cochrane was a daughter of Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane / Admiral in charge of Portsmouth". In a second hand, the following is written: “from library of Minnie Cochrane / Lady in Waiting to Princess Beatrice / (see her initials on front cover)”. The tableaux depict scenes from plays, stories, paintings, and the life of famous figures, such as Marie Antoinette, the Biblical story of Rebecca, Fotheringay [Mary Queen of Scots], Carmen, and Idylls of the King. The various characters are portrayed but such notable figures as Princess Beatrice, Prince Henry of Battenberg, Minnie Cochrane, Princess Helena Augusta Victoria, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and three of their children, the Marquis and Marchioness of Lorne (Princess Louise and Sir Henry Ponsby) and their children, and Major and Mrs. Bigge. |
