Description: |
Unpublished album created by Sir Edward Charles Blount (British, 1809-1905) and his wife Lady Gertrude Frances Blount (British, 1811-1897) between 1867 and 1875. The pages of the album contain 60 photocollages, which are comprised of a total of 572 photographs (albumen prints), watercolors and ink, that are geometric shapes and fantastic scenes. Many of the photographs are of famous personages of the time. A few pieces of the original binding survive and are preserved with various pages of notes, inscribed in an unidentified hand, that identify some of the people pictured. An note inscribed by Helmut Gernsheim states: "Some of the 60 pages are outstanding for the originality of the hand-painted designs, many of them by Blount and initialed by him. E.B., others are signed A.V. Many are elaborate photomontage surrealist pictures displaying great imagination. The album contains hundreds of photographs of well-known people, chiefly aristocrats." Three plates which were detached for an exhibition in 1956 and laid in. |
