Description:

One case of 55 albumen photographs, two original documents, and one facsimile document, collected by Edward Montagu Stuart Granville Wharncliffe, Earl of Mantagu-Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie documenting Paris Commune history. Includes captions inscribed by Lord Wharncliffe.

Gernsheim notes: "... photographs, mostly 8 1/2 x 11, but some smaller, formerly belonging to Lord Wharncliffe, whose two military passes to enter Paris from Versailles, and another document of the Communist rising, are included in this highly important documentary collection. A number of the photographs are by Disderi and Liebert. The names of the other photographers are not known. They may have belonged to Disderi's staff, since the photographs are almost uniform in size and quality ... There are also three execution scenes by E. Appert, Paris, which have been exposed as very clever fakes done by photomontage and re-photographing."
