Photograph album containing 42 mounted photographs (gelatins silver and collodion prints) of the South African War, also known as the Boer War, that took place between 1899 and 1902. Identified photographers whose work is represented in the collection are J. Wallace Bradley (active South Africa, circa 1900) , Benjamin William Caney (British, active South Africa, 1842-1895), John E. Middlebrook (British, born South Africa, 1863-1943), and Jan van Hoepen (Dutch, active South Africa, 1856-1922). A note by Helmut Gernsheim reads: "42 Boer War photographs of great rarity on account of their early date; many taken by Boers." |
