Description:

Published book of postcards, titled England to South and East Africa, Delagoa Bay, Beira and Mauritius (London: D. Currie 19--), containing 30 rotogravure postcards. The postcards are mixture of photographic views of ports of call, and illustrated views of passengers’ activities while aboard the steamship. The book is the first in a series of two that were issued by the Union-Castle Line, a London-based steamship company. This particular book was a display copy, and both the cover and the postcards are marked “Sample.” Inserted into the album is one gelatin silver snapshot of a woman accompanied by two ladies-in-waiting seated on the deck of a ship. The album dates sometime between 1899 (the year the Castle Line merged with the Union Steamship Company) and 1914 (the year when several ships listed in the postcard book were sunk during World War I).
